Bamileke King Coffee Table and Stools, Natural, Black, White, Spider Coffee Tables and Stool

These beautifully designed stools are traditionally used during royal ceremonies of the Bamileke tribe in Cameroon. Only the king can sit on them.

Carved by the Bamileke tribe of Cameroon, this stool served as seating during ceremonies. The largest and best stools were reserved for the king's use. The stool is carved from a single piece of wood from the trunk of the Cola tree. The wood is soaked in water to soften it before carving. After carving, the piece is stained and lacquered. The intricate woven pattern of this stool represents the web of the earth spider, a Bamileke symbol of wisdom.

A crack during the cutting process is seen as an interruption of the continuity of life, a bad omen, and in that case, the entire piece of wood is thrown away.

The stools have a special look. The wood carving creates a feeling of lightness and is the result of expert craftsmanship.
